The idea of a piece of animation reflecting so strongly one individual’s aesthetic is not a new one. In the early years, animated shorts were each distinctly original and imbued with the sensibilities (in design, manner, characterization, poses) of its guiding creator, but as mediums shifted and a corporate model became the de facto production process, much of this originality was lost. That’s what makes this series so special. Bakshi made one brilliant decision when starting the series, which sealed the fate of the series and created a star.

He has cited time and again the effect that the Ed Benedict designs for the early Hanna-Barbera series such as Huckleberry Hound and The Flintstones had on him. So there was no small amount of excitement when he got to a working age and found himself walking those same Hanna-Barbera halls that he had fantasized so much about as a child. Granted this Hanna-Barbera lacked much of the innovation, verve, and artistic sensibilities that he had always imagined, but still he most likely believed that the only way to enact change was from the inside.

While the sketches would have a similar overarching theme, they would vary wildly in terms of design and tone. It was at this point that Terry Gilliam’s name came up. The acknowledged problem with a show like this is getting all of the separate bits to somehow be a part of a cohesive program. So Gilliam was called in and asked to create short animated segments that could help keep the momentum of the show driving forward while also bringing some of the disparate live-action pieces together. It was the addition of this crucial piece that really brought about the birth of Monty Python.
