The whole city was gathered at the door and the disciples told Jesus, “Everyone is looking for you” (v. 37). The world is drawn to the focused person of purpose, especially one who is dedicated to serving and giving. The purpose-driven life takes time to refresh and recharge. Long before daylight Jesus went to a solitary place for prayer and meditation (v. 35). Even the Lord himself, with the noblest purposes ever known by human kind, needed private time before public ministry. ” The overwhelming global success of the Christian message and the Christian church becomes even more incredible when one considers that the public ministry of Christ lasted for fewer than three years.

Only Luke saves us from knowing absolutely nothing of the first thirty years of his life. Luke tells us that Jesus “grew and became strong, filled with wisdom; and the favor of God was upon him” (Luke 2:40). Luke also tells us that Jesus’ family went every year to Jerusalem for the festival of the Passover. He then recites the lovely story of how Jesus went to Jerusalem for Passover with his family when he was twelve. When they were a day out of Jerusalem on the way back home, they discovered that Jesus was not with them.

He retained good health and vigor as he approached his ninth decade of life. Moses said to himself, “My life has been good. ” The storyteller sets the stage for us in strikingly understandable images. A settled comfortable life with children and grandchildren was pleasing. However, God had another plan. God intruded with a theophany. A theophany is an experience where God unexpectedly interrupts or encroaches upon the ordinary affairs of life. The intrusion is absolutely unsought. This unsolicited incursion of God into the flow of life is exactly what happened to Moses.
