Perhaps no other issue better symbolizes contempt for the autonomy of free individuals on the part of some conservatives than this continued opposition to this fundamental human right. 69 Even in conservative Texas, a strong majority of citizens support some form of legal recognition for gay couples (63 percent in a 2010 Texas Tribune poll),70 and yet some in the legislature still won’t accept the Court’s decision.

The Domestic Partnership Benefits and Obligations Act would correct this imbalance by providing the same family benefits to lesbian and gay employees (and unmarried straight couples) that married employees already receive, such as health insurance, life insurance, and other benefits routinely included in policies covering employees with spouses. Unmarried straight and gay employees, of course, perform the same work and pay the same taxes as married employees, so clearly the current two-tiered system of compensation is wrong and violates the principle of equal pay for equal work, not to mention equal protection under the law.
